Annual Giving by Design™

The Framework

The 5M Architecture™

The 5M Architecture™ is a practical framework for designing annual giving campaigns as connected systems rather than collections of separate tactics. Each dimension answers a different strategic question, and together they help teams move from purpose to audience, communication, execution, and continuous improvement.

01

Mission

Mission establishes the purpose behind the campaign. It connects the fundraising effort to the organization’s broader mission, identifies the need being addressed, and clarifies why the campaign matters now. When the mission is clear, teams can make decisions with greater confidence and donors can more easily understand the purpose of their participation.
02

Market

Market defines who the campaign is trying to reach. It moves teams beyond a one-size-fits-all audience by considering donor segments, motivations, behaviors, relationships, and opportunities for engagement. A clear understanding of the market helps determine who should receive the message, what matters to them, and how the campaign should reach them.
03

Message

Message translates the campaign’s purpose into donor-centered communication. It connects organizational need with donor values, uses clear and compelling storytelling, and gives people a meaningful reason to act. Relevant messaging is consistent across channels while still being adapted to the audience and context.
04

Momentum

Momentum is how the campaign comes to life over time. It considers timing, channels, touchpoints, internal coordination, stewardship, and the sequence of interactions that keep donors connected to the campaign. Rather than relying on a single ask, momentum creates an intentional experience before, during, and after the fundraising moment.
05

Measurement

Measurement turns campaign activity into learning. It identifies what success looks like, tracks meaningful performance indicators, evaluates results across channels and audiences, and captures lessons that can strengthen future campaigns. Measurement helps teams build on what works instead of starting from scratch each time.
How They Work Together

Five Dimensions, One Connected System

The five dimensions are designed to be used together. Mission establishes why the campaign matters. Market identifies who needs to be engaged. Message determines what will connect with those audiences. Momentum coordinates how and when the campaign experience unfolds. Measurement shows what happened and what should improve next time. When all five are aligned, a campaign becomes more cohesive, easier to execute, and more useful as a foundation for future fundraising.
The Outcome

Sustainable Generosity™

Sustainable Generosity™ is the long-term outcome of an annual giving program that consistently connects purpose, people, communication, execution, and learning. It is not about asking donors for more at every opportunity. It is about designing fundraising experiences that build trust, deepen relationships, improve organizational learning, and create a healthier foundation for continued giving over time.
